Chaos and calm
Live together
And mix together
Like figures
In the distance at dawn
The long day ahead
Weariness appears
As a blurred reflection
Are we getting any nearer
To figuring this shit out
Shit
Some of us are starting to doubt
We ever will
But in sheer stubbornness
We’ll try
Hell or high water
We’ll push back
Against the rising tide
And it rises every time
We live while others pass
Or when rush hour traffic
Literally holds us back
Waiting in line
And watching time
Tick itself away
Minute after minute
Hour after hour
Day after goddamn day
We rush forward
We hold still
We wait until
The realness peels off
So we can celebrate
In the seams
As we gleam the surface
In hopes
Of rediscovering our purpose
The late night at the bar
Sunday morning coffee
A wedding reception
Sometimes it takes an occasion
To find some perspective
And perspectives can change
Our minds can rearrange themselves
The walls can close in
Or we can push people out
Actions and reactions
Factions that fracture
With the slightest gust
Just counting the year as another
And looking at the canvas
With an exasperated sigh
It is easy to become overwhelmed
We all dwell on details
Because the bigger picture
Entails
Bigger questions
But maybe life is
More than a journey
And we learn
More than lessons
Maybe we find
Our own answers
To the same questions
